Lautaro Martinez continued his impressive goalscoring streak by securing the top spot for Argentina in Copa America Group A with a convincing 2-0 victory over Peru, who were consequently eliminated from the competition.
In the absence of Lionel Messi due to a groin injury, Martinez took charge, netting early in the second half and then again late in the game to alleviate any early-match jitters at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
Despite a sluggish first half where Argentina struggled to find the rhythm, Leandro Paredes’ missed penalty did not haunt them as Peru failed to mount significant threats throughout the game.
Argentina, already assured of a spot in the quarter-finals, initially struggled to gain momentum. Their best chance early on came from Alejandro Garnacho’s deflected shot that tested Peru’s defense.
The breakthrough came soon after halftime when Angel Di Maria split Peru’s defense with a precise pass to Martinez, who calmly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.
Although Nicolas Tagliafico appeared to have doubled Argentina’s lead moments later from a corner, the goal was disallowed due to Giovani Lo Celso being offside and obstructing Gallese’s view.
Argentina had another opportunity to extend their lead in the 69th minute when Jesus Castillo’s handball in the box resulted in a penalty. However, Paredes struck the post with his powerful spot-kick.
Lautaro Martinez sealed the victory in the 86th minute with a beautifully executed finish, once again beating Gallese with a composed effort.
In the dying moments, Franco Zanelatto came close to a consolation goal for Peru with a powerful header that struck the near post, denying La Blanquirroja a late goal.
Argentina now looks forward to the quarter-finals, where they will face the runner-up of Group B, while Canada secured second place in Group A with a goalless draw against Chile
