France Secures UEFA Euro 2024 Quarter-Final Spot with 1-0 Win Over Belgium Thanks to Vertonghen’s Own Goal
France Secures a spot in the UEFA Euro 2024 Last 8 by narrowly defeating Belgium 1-0 in a High voltage match, courtesy of a late own goal by Jan Vertonghen. Despite a lackluster performance in front of goal, France managed to secure victory with the decisive moment arriving in the 85th minute, sending Belgium out of the tournament.
Lukaku and De Bruyne both had chances for the Red Devils but failed to find a way past Mike Maignan, and then Vertonghen diverted Randal Kolo Muani’s strike into his own net to send Belgium out.
Awaiting France in the last eight is either Portugal or Slovenia, while Belgium’s UEFA Euro 2024 campaign ends prematurely after a disappointing showing in Germany.
Having struggled in attack through the Euro group stage, both teams started slowly in Dusseldorf, with Antoine Griezmann’s tame effort into Koen Casteels’ gloves the only shot on target in the first half.
Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne created a brief scare for France with a deflected free-kick that required a crucial block by Maignan. Shortly after, France faced a setback as Adrien Rabiot received a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Jeremy Doku, his second booking of the tournament, which ruled him out of the next match.
Kevin De Bruyne then caused a bit of panic in France’s box as his free-kick took a big deflection off the wall and needed blocking by Mike Maignan.
Belgium’s first meaningful effort came in the 69th minute when Orel Mangala found Lukaku, whose powerful shot was blocked by Maignan. The French goalkeeper also denied De Bruyne’s long-range effort before France finally found the breakthrough.
Kolo Muani, coming off the bench, managed to get past Vertonghen, and although his initial shot was off target, it took a significant deflection off the Belgian defender, beating Casteels and finding the net.
