The Copa America 2024 group stage met its conclusion Tuesday evening as Colombia held on to secure the top spot in Group D, while Brazil finished 2nd.
Colombia’s draw earned them the necessary point to finish Group D First, setting up a quarter-final clash against Panama.
The early stages saw both teams struggle to find their rhythm in attack. Tensions rose when Vinicius Jr received a yellow card, ruling him out of Brazil’s quarter-final. However, his teammate Raphinha soon lifted Brazilian spirits by curling a superb long-range free-kick into the top corner, opening the scoring of the game.
Colombia, determined to equalize, faced a setback when a potential goal was disallowed for a marginal offside. Nonetheless, persistence paid off as Daniel Muñoz of Crystal Palace netted the equalizer for Colombia.
Despite several missed opportunities by both teams, the match ended in a draw in Santa Clara, ensuring Colombia’s top position in group D.
