Netherlands Past Turkiye to Reach UEFA Euro 2024 Semi-Finals with a 2-1 Win
The Netherlands secured their spot in the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-finals with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Turkiye in Berlin, where Mert Muldur’s own goal was the deciding factor.
Samet Akaydin headed home after 35 minutes at the Olympiastadion, while Arda Guler was denied by the woodwork as Turkiye threatened to cause an upset. Yet Ronald Koeman’s Oranje stood firm, levelling through a thumping Stefan de Vrij header before Muldur – under pressure from Cody Gakpo – turned into his own net after 76 minutes.
Despite a valiant effort, Vincenzo Montella’s men couldn’t find an equalizer, allowing the Netherlands to advance and face England in Dortmund on Wednesday.
The match began tentatively but saw action at both ends. Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay created an early chance, with Depay firing over just two minutes in. Turkiye responded through Salih Özcan, whose long-range effort went wide.
Turkiye capitalized on a set piece 10 minutes before halftime. Arda Güler, given too much space, curled in a cross that Akaydin headed home at the back post for his first international goal. This mirrored Merih Demiral’s success in Turkiye’s last-16 win against Austria.
The Dutch managed only four shots in a lackluster first half, their fewest in a Euros match since the 2004 semi-final against Portugal. Koeman introduced Wout Weghorst at halftime to add more firepower.
Turkiye almost extended their lead early in the second half. Güler’s free-kick clipped the post, and Bart Verbruggen made a shaky save from Kenan Yildiz’s attempt, with Weghorst clearing the danger in front of Kaay Ayhan.
The Netherlands capitalized on these narrow escapes five minutes later. Memphis Depay’s short corner found Stefan de Vrij, who headed down past Mert Günok to equalize.
The Netherlands’ comeback was complete six minutes later when Denzel Dumfries sent a cross into the box. Under pressure from Gakpo, Muldur accidentally turned the ball into his own net, putting the Dutch ahead.
Turkiye pushed for a late equalizer, with Zeki Çelik’s effort cleared off the line and Verbruggen making a crucial save to deny Semih Kılıçsoy. In the dying moments, Turkiye’s substitute Bertuğ Yıldırım was sent off for dissent, capping a frantic finish.
With this hard-fought victory, the Netherlands advanced to face England in the semi-finals, set to take place in Dortmund.
