England vs Netherlands: UEFA Euro 2024 Semi-Final Match Preview

England take on the Netherlands in the semifinals of UEFA Euro 2024 with the Three Lions still aiming for a first title since the 1966 World Cup.

Three Lions have battled through to the final four following a quarterfinal penalty shootout win over Switzerland in the round of 16.

Ronald Koeman’s side have improved as the tournament has progressed, after a mixed showing in the group stages, and they rallied to knock out Turkey in the quarters.

A showdown in Dortmund is a huge Tie for both sides and historical meetings between the two teams has thrown up some superb battles.

Team News

England welcomes back Luke Shaw, who missed the first four matches due to a hamstring injury. Luke Shaw is now ready to start. In defense, Marc Guehi, returning from suspension, will compete with Ezri Konsa for a spot, with Southgate potentially opting for a flexible defensive setup.

Harry Kane, England’s all-time leading goalscorer, is fit to play after cramping in the previous match. Harry Kane aims to build on his record in the European Championship’s knockout stage, where he has scored 5 goals, tied with Antoine Griezmann for the most in elimination rounds.

The Netherlands boss Koeman will face a key decision in the attack. Wout Weghorst, whose introduction at half-time against Turkey turned the quarter-final tie, might start alongside Memphis Depay. However, a bench role seems more probable. Depay and Cody Gakpo have been directly involved in 63.5% of the Oranje’s goal attempts, contributing to six of their nine goals. Ronald Koeman is likely to stick with his starting XI, featuring Bart Verbruggen in goal, Virgil van Dijk as captain, and Xavi Simons linking midfield and attack.

Predicted Lineups

Netherlands Possible Starting XI:

  • Goalkeeper: Verbruggen,  Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake;  Schouten, Reijnders,  Malen; Simons, Gakpo,  Depay

England Possible Starting XI:

  • Goalkeeper: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Saka; Mainoo, Rice, Trippier: Bellingham, Foden; Kane
