Heartbreak for Canada as Uruguay Triumphs in Copa America 2024 3rd Place Match
Canada came so agonizingly close to a historic result, going in front with 10 minutes to go in regulation, but couldn’t hold on as they fall to Uruguay in the 3rd place match at the 2024 Copa America on a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw.
Rodrigo Bentancur’s early strike put Uruguay in control, but Canada responded brilliantly. Ismael Kone’s spectacular overhead flick equalized the score before halftime, igniting Canadian hopes.
In the 2nd half, after both teams exhausted their substitutions, Jonathan David came off the bench and seemed to secure a podium finish for Canada with an 80th-minute goal. Les Rouges were on the verge of a historic result in their first-ever Copa America appearance.
However, the experienced Luis Suarez, likely playing his final Copa America, had other plans. His dramatic 92nd-minute equalizer forced the match into a penalty shootout. In the ensuing spot-kicks, Ismael Kone’s attempt was saved, and Alphonso Davies missed his shot, handing Uruguay the victory.
Canada’s head coach, Jesse Marsch, once again inspired a valiant effort from his team. Despite fielding a rotated lineup, Canada matched Uruguay blow for blow. However, their unwillingness to adopt a more defensive approach after David’s goal left the game open and frantic, ultimately allowing Suarez to capitalize and force penalties.
