The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has reportedly submitted a formal request to FIFA to award victory over Morocco in their debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The Football tournament at Paris 2024 started with controversy, highlighted by a chaotic conclusion to the Argentina vs. Morocco match, which continues to draw attention. Despite Morocco’s 2-1 win, Argentina is disputing the outcome due to the events that transpired in Saint-Etienne.
According to Ariel Senosiain of TyC Sports, the AFA has formally asked FIFA to award them the win. The AFA argues that the match was effectively suspended and claims that Argentine players were subjected to aggression from Moroccan fans, who allegedly stormed the field.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) believes these circumstances merit awarding all three points to Argentina.
Can FIFA do something about Argentina’s request?
However, Argentina’s reported request to FIFA makes little sense as the Olympic tournament is not a FIFA event. This distinction is why clubs are not obligated to release players for the Olympics, unlike for the FIFA World Cup, FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, or continental competitions Like Euro or Copa America.
According to Gaston Edul Journalist of TyC Sports added that FIFA did not find Medina’s goal to be offside and suggested that the match should have concluded when Argentina scored their 2nd goal. Nevertheless, the IOC had a different perspective.
