Argentina U23 vs Ukraine U23: All to Play For in Group B Showdown

The Albiceleste will face Ukraine at the Stade de Lyon on Tuesday 30 July, with both teams looking to win and progress to the quarter-finals. Argentina can also advance with a draw, while Ukraine needs to win or beat Iraq or Morocco on goal difference if there is a draw. All four teams in Group B are tied on three points, so it all comes down to the final match.

A victory for the Albiceleste would secure their place in the quarterfinals. Even a draw could suffice, provided results elsewhere favor them. The pressure is on, but with Olympic gold medalist Javier Mascherano at the helm, Argentina will be drawing on their experience to navigate this crucial match.

Ukraine’s impressive 2-1 win over Morocco, despite playing with ten men, has kept their Olympic dream alive. They must win to advance, or hope for a favorable result in the other group match to progress on goal difference.

Team News and Tactics

Mascherano has a selection headache with several key players on yellow cards, including Di Cesare, Garcia, Fernandez, and Gondou. A booking for any of these players would rule them out of the quarterfinals if Argentina advances.

Ukraine is without suspended center-back Salyuk and also has a long injury list. Rotan will need to carefully balance his lineup to avoid further suspensions.

Predicted Lineups

  • Argentina (4-4-2): Rulli (GK), Lujan Melli, Di Cesare, Otamendi, Zenon, Almada, Fernandez, Gondou, Medina, Beltran, Alvarez.
  • Ukraine (4-5-1): Fesyun (GK), Krupskyi, Talovierov, Batahov, Martynyuk, Rubchynskyi, Braharu, Kryskiv, Mykhaylenko, Khlan, Sikan.
