Atletico Madrid Seal Record-Breaking Deal for Julian Alvarez
Atletico Madrid have reached a stunning agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of Argentine striker Julian Alvarez. The Spanish club will pay a fee of £81.5 million (€95 million), including add-ons, making Alvarez City’s most expensive departure in history.
The 24-year-old has been vocal about his desire for more regular playing time, despite enjoying a successful two-year spell at the Etihad Stadium, scoring 36 goals in 103 appearances. Alvarez is now set to discuss personal terms with Atletico and is expected to finalize his move to the Spanish capital.
Manchester City signed Alvarez from River Plate in 2022 for just £14m and could get almost six times that amount back if all the add-ons are met.
It was widely reported earlier this week that Atletico Madrid had changed their mind about selling young striker Samu Omorodion to Chelsea for around £34.4m, giving them the freedom to pursue Alvarez with more aggression. Atletico rejected a £27.4m bid from the Blues for the 20-year-old in June, but the deal is back on and could soon be completed.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are closing in on the signing of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is expected to travel to Spain for a medical shortly after giving his go-ahead for a move.
Gallagher has a year left on his contract with the Blues and will join the Spanish side for £34.2m. Atletico Madrid have already shelled out £29.6m for Real Sociedad center-back Robin Le Normand and £27.5m for Villarreal striker Alexandre Sorloth.
