LAFC Closing In on Antoine Griezmann’s Sensation
Los Angeles FC is on the brink of a historic transfer, with reports indicating they are in advanced negotiations to acquire French superstar Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.
According to the report, sources view the situation “as a question of when, not if.” The potential front three of Denis Bouanga and recently signed Olivier Giroud would probably be the best in all of MLS. Giroud even teased Antoine Griezmann’s interest in a move to Major League Soccer, saying the Atlético Madrid player was “a bit jealous.”
LAFC will likely have to change their three designated player slots, which Giroud, Bouanga and Eduard Atuesta currently occupy. The latter would likely have his contract bought out to make room for Antoine Griezmann if the transfer were to go through.
LAFC is running against time here as the MLS summer transfer window ends on August 14th. According to the report, talks between LAFC and Atletico Madrid included a fee that would fall below Griezmann’s $10.9 million release clause.
Atlético Madrid values Antoine Griezmann, who is still in the squad, but the team have already signed Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth and are in the advanced stages of bringing Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez to Spain. If the latter happens, Griezmann’s move to MLS could quickly materialize.
At 33, French superstar is enjoying a strong season for Atleti, scoring 24 goals and providing eight assists in all competitions. His rise to fame at Real Sociedad came alongside former LAFC great: Carlos Vela. This summer ended in disappointment for both Giroud and Griezmann as France were knocked out in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 by eventual champions Spain.
LAFC welcomed Antoine Griezmann’s international teammate on August 1 with a press conference. The former AC Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal forward is yet to make his debut for the Black and Gold, despite being included in the squad for the League Cup.
