Barcelona Sets Two-Week Deadline for Nico Williams Pursuit
Barcelona is intensifying its efforts to secure the signing of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams. The Catalan giants have reportedly set a two-week deadline to finalize a deal for the talented Spaniard before their La Liga clash on August 24th.
Williams’ impressive performances at UEFA Euro 2024 have only heightened Barcelona’s interest. Despite previous attempts to acquire the player falling short, the club remains determined to bolster its attacking options with the promising winger.
Barcelona originally planned to sign Williams before he moved to Dani Olmo. However, negotiations over the Athletic striker failed to progress and a deal was eventually reached to sign Olm from RB Leipzig instead.
Barcelona are still interested in Nico Williams despite never progressing in transfer talks. But Mundo Deportivo report that the club have set a two-week deadline to bring him to Catalonia.
If Williams is still an Athletic player when they visit Montjuic on August 24, Barcelona will no longer attempt to sign him during this window.
If Barca are without a new winger after this game, they will start looking at alternative targets before the August 30 transfer deadline.
Although Barcelona have fallen into financial trouble in recent years, the club believe they are in a strong enough position to activate Williams’ €60m release clause. The winger already knows about the wages offered at Barca but did not say whether he would accept their proposal.
Club president Joan Laporta hopes to add Williams to a forward line with UEFA Euro 2024 teammate Lamine Yamala to challenge Real Madrid for La Liga. Their rivals from the Spanish capital have been boosted by the arrival of Kylian Mbappe this summer, with Endrick also completing his long-awaited move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
