Manchester City Edge Out Manchester United in Thrilling Community Shield Shootout

Manchester City claimed the Community Shield with a dramatic 7-6 penalty shootout victory over Manchester United on Saturday, following a pulsating 1-1 draw at Wembley.

The game exploded into life in the final stages, with Alejandro Garnacho breaking the deadlock for United in the 82nd minute with a clinical finish. However, Bernardo Silva headed home a deserved equalizer just seven minutes later to send the game to penalties.

After a slow start, City looked to have hit the ground running when Oscar Bobb latched onto a loose back pass from Lisandro Martinez, but Nico O’Reilly could only hit the far post with his curling effort.

Bruno Fernandes thought he had given United the lead in the 54th minute but a superb shot past Ederson and into the far corner was denied by an offside flag before Marcus Rashford hit the post after a quick counter-attack.

As in the FA Cup final in May, Garnacho broke the deadlock at Wembley, cutting inside from the right before curling a low shot from Ederson’s reach into the bottom right corner.

But Silva soon celebrated his 30th birthday with an equalizer, beating Facundo Pellistri at the far post to nod Bobbo’s cross past Andre Onan.

Onana saved City’s first penalty, denying Silva, but the game died suddenly after Ederson blocked Jadon Sancho’s effort.

Akanji kept his cool to win for the Premier League champions when Jonny Evans sent his free-kick over the bar.
