Liverpool Unleash Firepower in Slot’s Anfield Debut, Thrash Sevilla 4-1
Liverpool made a resounding statement ahead of their Premier League campaign, as new manager Arne Slot enjoyed a triumphant Anfield debut. The Reds demolished Sevilla 4-1 in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.
A stunning volley from Diogo Jota and a brace from Luis Diaz put the All Reds in good control at half-time, with Arne Slot naming a strong starting line-up six days after their league opener against newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
Diogo Jota found the top-right corner with a brilliant left-footed finish after being picked out at the back post by Trent Alexander-Arnold, then turned provider to tee up Luis Diaz for another powerful strike into the same corner.
Luis Diaz then scored his 2nd and Liverpool’s third on the stroke of half-time after good work from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Sevilla coach Garcia Pimienta made nine changes at half-time and one of the introductions, 21-year-old Peque Fernandez, reduced the deficit with a fine finish at the far post, but Liverpool youngster Trey Nyoni had the final say.
The 17-year-old took advantage of a loose ball to volley into the bottom right-hand corner from just outside the box to end Liverpool’s productive outing as they secured their fourth friendly win in a row.
Liverpool face Las Palmas in another friendly later on Sunday, although a much-changed side is expected to take the field after Slot handed significant minutes to most of the Reds’ regulars against Sevilla.
