Monaco Stun Champions in 3-0 Thrashing
Barcelona’s 11-year dominance in the Joan Gamper Trophy came to a stunning end on Monday as Monaco inflicted a humiliating 3-0 defeat on Hansi Flick’s side. The result marks a significant setback for the Catalan giants as they prepare for the upcoming La Liga season.
The Flick was without several big names from the start as the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys hosted the traditional curtain-raiser, although Robert Lewandowski started and the likes of Lamine Yamal, Ilkay Gundogan, and Ferran Torres came on as substitutes.
Any hopes of a positive start to his reign were dashed by an impressive Monaco side after a goalless first half, Lamine Camara pouncing on a loose pass from Inigo Martinez to head home in the 50th minute.
Breel Embolo added a second just seven minutes later, the Swiss international timing his drive to perfection before beating Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Visitors Adi Hutter then added another gloss to the death, following a flurry of Blaugrana changes. Substitute Christian Mawissa latched on to a loose ball on the right side of the area, then curled a fine finish into the bottom left corner to end a poor night for Barca.
