Manchester City Deny Luis Diaz Transfer Rumours

Manchester City has categorically denied reports of a potential transfer deal for Liverpool winger Luis Diaz. Despite claims from Spanish outlet El Chiringuito that City had agreed personal terms with the Colombian and were prepared to pay a substantial fee, multiple reliable sources have dismissed the speculation.

Spanish broadcaster El Chiringuito have claimed that City have agreed personal terms with Diaz on a five-year deal and that the Premier League champions are willing to pay Liverpool €70m (£59.8m) to sign the Colombian.

Liverpool quickly picked up the rumor and transfer aggregator accounts on X, formerly Twitter, which received hundreds of thousands of views. One of the reasons was that the same original journalist was hot on the heels of Sam Omorodion’s Chelsea transfer debacle and had been referred to by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano in the past.

However, Romano himself was quick to post on the subject of Diaz, insisting that “Manchester City sources deny any deal”. Liverpool journalist James Pearce and Manchester City reporter Sam Lee said similar things, silencing rumors from all sides.

City have invested £81.5m from the somewhat surprising sale of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid. The Argentine has been a key player in the club’s success since his arrival in 2022, often the first-choice alternative to Erling Haaland or Kevin De Bruyne, but has seemingly grown frustrated with his role.

But rather than invest that money in an outright replacement for Alvarez, 90min understands City are looking to promote from within and offer more game time to the likes of James McAtee, who has returned from a two-season loan spell at Sheffield United, and Oscar Bobb, both domestic 21-year-olds.

McAtee and Bobb started Saturday’s Community Shield victory over Manchester United at Wembley, as did fellow academy player, 19-year-old technically gifted midfielder Nico O’Reilly.

City are more likely to spend the unexpected Alvarez on a deeper central midfielder, with Newcastle United cult hero Bruno Guimaraes still of interest to the Premier League champions.
