Barcelona Eyeing Kante Amidst Midfield Concerns
Barcelona are exploring the possibility of signing veteran midfielder N’Golo Kante to bolster their midfield options before the transfer window closes. The Catalan giants have been monitoring the French World Cup winner since he departed from Chelsea last summer when he opted for a lucrative move to Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad.
Kante’s impressive performances at Euro 2024 have reignited interest in the defensive midfielder, with Barcelona sporting director Deco believed to be a keen admirer of his abilities. The club is currently lacking a true ball-winning midfielder in their squad, a deficiency highlighted by their recent pre-season defeat to Monaco.
While Barcelona’s priority remains to sign a left-winger, the midfield situation is also a concern. With key players Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and Gavi currently sidelined with injuries, the team lacks depth in the middle of the park.
Barcelona have been linked with Kante even before his arrival at Al Ittihad and SPORT now reports that a fresh approach could be made. The Catalans are said to be in contact with the Frenchman’s camp and could capitalize on his apparent desire to leave Saudi Arabia.
Kante is believed to be of particular interest to Barca sporting director Dec, although the left wing has been a priority all summer – with the club seemingly refusing to let go of Nic Williams. Head coach Hansi Flick is “very clear” that quality in attacking areas is required, especially as Barcelona hopes to be able to count on Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and Gavi in midfield once all three are fit again. The problem is that it doesn’t help Flicka at the moment.
The hierarchy must decide if midfield reinforcements are needed, especially given how physically inferior Barca were against Monaco in the recent Joan Gamper Trophy. In the short term, 17-year-old Marc Bernal is expected to start the season opener against Valencia at the weekend and then decide whether to formally pursue Kante.
Barcelona do not have a ball-winning midfielder and Deco previously eyed Amadou Onana before the Belgium international swapped Everton for Aston Villa. The club has also long been linked with Martin Zubimendi, who rejected Liverpool’s interest in staying at Real Sociedad.
There would be competition for Kante from both West Ham United and Atlético Madrid.
