Julian Alvarez Joins Atletico Madrid in Search of New Challenge
Argentine striker Julian Alvarez has completed a €95 million (£81.5m) move from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old, who won multiple trophies with Pep Guardiola’s side, is seeking a new challenge to reach his full potential.
Julian Alvarez, who scored 36 goals in two seasons at City, expressed his gratitude for his time at the Etihad but revealed his desire for a fresh start. He believes Atletico Madrid provides the ideal environment for him to develop into “the best version” of himself.
The Spanish club has been active in the transfer market, acquiring Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad and Alexander Sorloth from Villarreal. However, their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has stalled.
No other Manchester City player made as many appearances as Julian Alvarez across all competitions and Pep Guardiola was keen to keep him at the club, but the 24-year-old had his heart set on a new challenge.
“I felt like I needed a change in my career, a new challenge,” Julian Alvarez told reporters at his Atletico unveiling on Friday.
“I feel like this is a club where I can get the tools and the space to become the best version of myself as a football player.
“From the very first moment, even before it was official, people have been very supportive. Many fans were at the airport waiting for the flight to land.
“That support and affection from the beginning makes me really happy. It makes me confident too. I’m very grateful.”
Julian Alvarez is the most expensive of three signings made by Atletico ahead of the new campaign, which they begin by traveling to Villarreal on Monday.
