Nico Williams Remains Content at Athletic Bilbao Despite Transfer Interest

Nico Williams, the talented Spanish winger, has reiterated his commitment to Athletic Bilbao for the time being, despite attracting interest from top clubs like Barcelona and Arsenal during the recent transfer window.

Williams’ impressive performance at UEFA Euro 2024, where he scored twice and provided an assist for Spain, caught the attention of several European giants. His 13 chances created and 13 successful dribbles during the tournament showcased his exceptional skills.

The winger played in six of La Roja’s seven games in Germany, scoring twice and providing one assist.

Only Spanish rider Lamine Yamal (19) bettered his 13 chances created in the tournament, finishing second behind Dani Olmo (14) for successful dribbles (13).

Williams has three years left on his contract at Athletic but the deal includes a €55m release clause, yet no club activated it before the window closed on Friday.

Speaking to DAZN after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in LaLiga, the 22-year-old insisted he remains happy in the Basque Country.

“There were approaches from many clubs. I did well at the Euros and that’s a great showcase,” he said.

“I had many clubs to choose from but my heart is with Athletic. I’m happy here, I’m very happy here. God knows what will happen in the future.”

Athletic have four points from as many matches in LaLiga this season, having also beaten Valencia, drawn with Getafe and lost to Barcelona.
