Yashin Trophy Nominees Revealed: Martinez, Simon, and Williams Lead the Pack
The nominees for the 2024 Yashin Trophy, which recognizes the world’s best goalkeeper, have been announced. The prestigious award, previously won by Emi Martinez in 2023, features a diverse group of talented shot-stoppers from around the globe.
Martinez was one of the heroes of Argentina’s triumph at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022 when he made a legendary save to deny Randal Kolo Muani what looked like a certain goal in the final of the competition.
The 32-year-old fighter was also nominated for the award for 2024, as he was once again a key part of the Argentine team that succeeded in the international competition – this time Copa America 2024.
However, the goalkeeper is the only South American candidate for the Yashin Trophy, with Alisson Becker – widely regarded as the world’s best stopper – not named in the shortlist. Eight nominees come from European countries, Portuguese Diogo Costa, Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma, Swiss Gregor Kobel and Yann Sommer, Ukrainian Andriy Lunin, French Mike Maignan, Georgian Giorgi Mamardashvili and Spaniard Unai Simon.
