Barcelona Signs Wojciech Szczesny as Emergency Goalkeeper
Barcelona has made a surprising move to bolster their goalkeeping ranks following the season-ending injury to Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The Catalan giants have secured the services of Wojciech Szczesny on a free transfer, a move that comes just weeks after the former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper announced his retirement.
Germany international Ter Stegen underwent surgery last weekend after suffering a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Inaki Pena was originally set to cover for Ter Stegen, but Barca have now strengthened their squad with the signing of former Arsenal player Szczesny.
Szczesny announced his retirement from football last month after terminating his contract with Juventus, where he was a regular after replacing Italian great Gianluigi Buffon between the sticks.
Szczesny won Serie A and the Coppa Italia three times each with Juve and made over 250 appearances for the club, but then lost his place due to the end-of-season recruitment of Michele Di Gregorio.
Barcelona lead LaLiga with 21 points from eight games and Hansi Flick’s side will be looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat at Osasuna when they visit Alaves next Sunday.
