Lionel Messi Aims for MLS Cup Glory After Leading Inter Miami to Historic Supporters’ Shield Victory
Lionel Messi has set his sights on achieving MLS Cup success after guiding Inter Miami to their first-ever Supporters’ Shield. In a thrilling match against the Columbus Crew, Messi scored twice, helping Miami secure a 3-2 victory on Wednesday.
With this win, Inter Miami is also in contention to break the regular-season points record in MLS. To surpass the current record of 73 points set by the New England Revolution in 2021, Miami must triumph in their remaining two matches before the playoffs.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Messi stated, “We suffered until the end. It shows what this team is about.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on the next challenge ahead: “The first objective has been achieved, and now we have to think about what’s next.”
Messi acknowledged the playoff format, noting, “The first round is three games, but then it’s one game, and anything can happen. However, we have the great advantage of playing all our games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home.”
Miami’s head coach, Gerardo Martino, echoed Messi’s sentiments, stating, “We reached the objective. We experienced both good and challenging moments in the game, which is part of the journey to achieve success.”
Martino highlighted the team’s progress, saying, “Now we can confidently say that, based on our results and performance, we’ve reached a higher level. We are in a construction and building phase, aiming to create a franchise that aspires to win more than lose. This transformation is crucial, and achieving 20 wins in the league is a significant milestone for us.”
As Inter Miami looks ahead to the playoffs, the focus remains on capitalizing on their home advantage and striving for MLS Cup glory.
