Lionel Messi Prioritizes Playoffs Over Single-Season MLS Points Record for Inter Miami
Lionel Messi has emphasized that breaking the single-season MLS points record is a secondary concern for Inter Miami as they gear up for the playoffs. The team recently secured their first Supporters’ Shield title by defeating the Columbus Crew, the reigning MLS Cup champions, with a thrilling 3-2 victory on the road, where Messi showcased his talent by scoring two goals, including a stunning free-kick.
With two matches left in the regular season against Toronto and the New England Revolution, Inter Miami has the opportunity to set a new league points record. They need to win both games to surpass the New England Revolution’s 2021 record of 73 points. However, Messi insists that achieving this milestone pales in comparison to the importance of succeeding in the postseason.
“The points record is secondary; the main focus is on the upcoming playoffs,” Messi stated in an interview with Apple TV following Miami’s Supporters’ Shield victory. He highlighted the significance of the playoff format, which includes a best-of-three series followed by elimination games, where anything can happen.
Messi noted the advantage of playing at home, where Miami has been particularly strong, but stressed the need to prove their capability to win in crucial moments.
On the other hand, Toronto FC is facing the brink of elimination from playoff contention after suffering a 4-1 defeat to the New York Red Bulls. Currently occupying the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, Toronto’s upcoming match against Miami is their last chance to keep their season alive. They must secure a victory and rely on favorable outcomes from other matches.
Toronto’s head coach, John Herdman, expressed disappointment with his team’s performance, stating, “It was not good enough; there were no excuses. We lacked the necessary setup and execution on the pitch.” He acknowledged the team’s passive approach in a critical game, emphasizing the need for character and fight in high-pressure situations.
As Inter Miami prepares for the playoffs, all eyes will be on Messi and his teammates to see if they can carry their momentum into the postseason and potentially secure an MLS Cup title.
