Dorival Junior Optimistic About Brazil’s 2026 World Cup Qualification After 2-1 Win Over Chile
Dorival Junior is confident that Brazil will secure their spot in the 2026 World Cup following a crucial 2-1 victory over Chile, despite the team’s inconsistent performance in recent qualifiers. Prior to this win, Brazil had suffered four losses in their last five matches, placing them fifth in the CONMEBOL standings and at risk of dropping out of the top eight.
The victory in Chile propelled Brazil to fourth place, but they remain just three points ahead of eighth-placed Paraguay, who previously defeated them 1-0. Despite the lackluster display, Dorival expressed relief at the much-needed three points.
“We re moving step-by-step, with a lot to fix, but little by little finding the way,” Dorival stated after the match. He praised the team’s maturity, noting their balance and composure despite their youth.
Should Brazil fail to qualify for the World Cup, it would mark a historic first absence from the tournament, especially after the expansion from 32 to 48 teams, which has added two additional qualification spots for CONMEBOL.
Dorival highlighted the selection challenges he has faced during this campaign, as only four players from the starting lineup in Chile—Danilo, Marquinhos, Lucas Paqueta, and Raphinha—had participated in the 2022 World Cup. Injuries to key players like Alisson, Eder Militao, and Vinicius Junior have further complicated matters.
“A team renewal is not simple,” Dorival remarked. “We don’t have the structure that was set up for the previous World Cup, making the games even more challenging due to the balance between the youth of these boys and the experience of others.”
Despite these hurdles, Dorival remains optimistic about Brazil’s prospects for the World Cup in two years. “We will arrive with a strong team, but we will face some difficulties,” he affirmed.
Defender Marquinhos echoed his coach’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for patience. “Seeking changes is beside the point,” he said. “I’m happy with Dorival and the work he’s been doing.”
Marquinhos stressed the importance of allowing Dorival time to understand the team and utilize the players effectively. “We showed that we have quality and many good players. We know the coach’s ability and what a great professional and person he is.”
As Brazil looks to improve and grow as a cohesive unit, the focus remains on securing their place in the upcoming World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
