Aitana Bonmati Wins Second Consecutive Ballon d’Or Feminin: A Stellar Year for Barcelona’s Midfielder

Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati has made history by winning her second consecutive Ballon d’Or Feminin, following her triumph in 2023. The talented Catalan player has once again been recognized as the best women’s footballer in the world after an outstanding season with Barcelona, where she played a pivotal role in securing the club’s fifth consecutive Liga F title and lifting the prestigious Champions League trophy.

Bonmati’s remarkable achievements this year saw her outshine notable competitors, including her teammates Caroline Graham Hansen and Alexia Putellas, as well as Khadija Shaw and Lucy Bronze. Her victory continues the legacy of excellence among Spanish players, as she follows in the footsteps of her Barcelona and Spain teammate Putellas, who won the award in 2021 and 2022.

Despite Spain’s inability to medal at the recent Olympics, Bonmati was instrumental in their UEFA Nations League success, further solidifying her status as a top player. Her impressive performances earned her a new contract with Barcelona, which she signed in September.

The year 2024 marks the fourth consecutive time a Spanish player has claimed the Ballon d’Or Feminin, showcasing the dominance of Spanish talent in women’s football. The award, first presented in 2018 to Ada Hegerberg, has since celebrated the achievements of exceptional players, including USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe in 2019.

At just 26 years old, Bonmati has already made a strong start to the 2024/25 season, scoring three goals in five appearances. Currently, Barcelona leads Liga F, maintaining a comfortable distance ahead of their rivals Real Madrid. With her exceptional skills and determination, Aitana Bonmati continues to shine as one of the brightest stars in women’s football.
